History of Geography Department

Borholla College is a premier institution of entire Borholla area of Jorhat District of Assam, India. The College is affiliated to Dibrugarh University and enlisted under UGC 2(F) & 12 (B) Act. The college is located about 40 km distance from  district headquarter of Jorhat and close proximity to Naga Hills, which is one of the offshoots of Himalayan mountain system. Borholla area is well known for production of good quality rice, tea, vegetables etc. and also for extraction of coal and petroleum.  The college was established in the year 1990 and started its glorious journey as arts Degree College.

The Department of Geography was established in the same year i.e. 1990 with a general course. The founder teachers of this Department were Mr. Chakren Saikia and Mr. Biman Gogoi.   Major Course was started in the year 2010.  Now the department is offering Honors’ and Core courses using modern method of teaching with three numbers of permanent faculties. Modern Geoinformatics techniques are also taught for the greater benefit of the students. Department has more than 150 students in 2022 and produced a lot of academically successful students in every year and they have been engaged in different fields of the society. The department also arranges many co-curricular activities as well as self employment generation program for the development of the students. The department has a forum named “Geographical Forum” of Borholla College and it has also maintained a wall magazine named Kanchanjangha.

The first batch of the Major students came out successfully in the year 2010. Since then, quite a good number of students have been offering Geography as a Major subject. Excellent results with 90 percent and above in undergraduate level with maximum numbers of 1st class holders have been a matter of glory for Borholla College in general and the Department of Geography in particular. Some Pass outs from this department or alumni are well placed in and outside Assam. The Department of Geography is pioneer in the college to conduct National Level seminar (Online).
