History of the Department
The Departments of Economics began it has journey in 1990 as a general subject. It is one of the oldest departmentsof the College, which was established along with the inception of Borholla College and has made a qualitative contribution to education in economics. It obtained approval from Dibrugarh University for introducing Economics as Major subject from the session 1996-97.The founder faculty member of the department was Mrs. BornaliKalita. Mr. JayantaSharmah was another faculty member of the department at that time. Mr. BishwajitSaikia and Mrs. GayatriGoswami also contributed for the department as faculty members. At present the Departmental strength consists of three assistant professors specialized in varied areas of economics, namelyMrs. BornaliKalita, Mrs. AnamikaHazarika and Mrs. GeetanjoleeGogoi and presently, Mrs.GeetanjoleeGogoi is working as the Head of the department.
The department has produced number of honours and general graduate students from its inception. The alumni of the departments have established themselves in various sectors and have contributed a lot towards the socio-economic development of the state as well as the country. Besides teaching, the department also organizes class wise seminars, group discussions, and quiz competition among the students for the overall development of the students. To express their views independently through their writings the department has beenpublishing a wall magazine named “Arthashatra” every year since 2009.
